Spanning the National Curriculum, my school musicals cover subjects and topics from ancient history to urgent environmental issues of our time. Five of my twenty-one musicals were created in association with WWF, the World Wildlife Fund.
Performing in a musical is an exciting as well as educational experience for children; my many years as a class teacher and director of popular theatre groups – e.g. The Crouch End Crickets and Jackson's Lane Theatre – have left me in no doubt about that. Children develop important learning and social skills through singing, dancing and drama. They have a love of humour as well as an instinct for the serious – characteristics that I like to reflect in my musicals.
I begin each new work by immersing myself in the subject. As I am writing and composing, songs and script are tried out with my pupils. Final adjustments, for performance and publication, are made with this hands-on experience.
Children are entirely capable of appreciating complex music and lyrics, and so I believe that they ought to experience a great diversity of musical styles, rhythms and melodies.
My musicals have been staged by primary, elementary and secondary schools as well as theatre groups in the UK and abroad, and featured with considerable public acclaim on television and radio.
Evenly distributed solo parts and choruses cater for casts of all sizes and abilities. Performances vary in duration from about thirty minutes to over an hour.
Project Packs, consisting of illustrated scripts and CDs with vocal and backing tracks; and Performance Packs, including the licence required to stage any musical in public, make it easy and economical for everyone to put on a memorable show for children and parents alike.
